The peştemal was first used as a set of towels within Turkish bathhouses. Its lightweight, absorbent and fast-drying qualities made it ideal to use in the humid and damp spaces of the hammam. Hand-woven by traditional methods using 100 percent Turkish cotton dyed with vegetable dyes, peştemal are famous for their absorbency and softness. They are suited for everyday use, and are a great (maybe even better) alternative than the typical terry-cloth towel. Compact and lightweight, a peştemal is perfect for travel, picnics, and lying on the beach. We also love using it as a tablecloth, picnic blanket, a light throw, or even as a beautiful shawl.
