Being the most important port of the Ottoman Empire on the Mediterranean, the city of Çanakkale was visited frequently by many travelers and merchants. In the 17th century, Çanakkale ceramics started to become famous among both locals and travellers far and wide for their unique characteristics, daily functionality and green-based color palette. This fame even affected how the city name is called. Once known as Dardennelles, the city started to be called as ‘Çanakçılar Kalesi’ (Çanak is the Turkish word for bowl, Çanakçılar means Bowl sellers), and became ‘Çanakkale’ over time.
